Chapter 1: The Woman in the Worn Coat

I stepped into a Fifth Avenue bridal salon in an old coat — but after an heiress spilled hot coffee on me, a man everyone feared walked in and dropped to one knee.

That was the moment the entire room stopped breathing.

But let me go back.

Her name was Celeste Rutherford.

At least, that was the name everyone kept murmuring like it mattered more than anyone else’s.

She had flawless hair.

Perfect makeup.

A diamond bracelet bright enough to catch every chandelier in the salon.

And she stared at me like I had wandered in through the wrong door.

I was wearing plain flats.

A worn beige coat.

No jewelry.

No designer bag.

Nothing that announced wealth.

Nothing that made anyone hurry toward me with champagne.

That was the point.

I had barely been inside ten minutes when Celeste glanced me up and down and smiled.

Then she said it loudly enough for every bride, stylist, and sales associate to hear.

"Women like you don’t wear Vera Wang."

I looked at her.

She tipped her coffee cup toward me.

The hot liquid struck my chest.

It spread across my coat and ran down my sleeve.

The room went silent.

A bride on a pedestal covered her mouth.

A sales associate whispered, "My God."

Celeste turned on her.

"Don’t be dramatic."

"It was hot."

"So?"

Then she looked back at me.

"Perhaps she’ll remember which stores are meant for her."

I didn’t move.

I didn’t wipe the stain.

I didn’t raise my voice.

That bothered her more than anger would have.

"You heard me, didn’t you?"

"I heard you."

"Then why are you still standing here?"

"Because I haven’t finished what I came to do."

Her smile shifted.

"And what exactly is that?"

Before I could answer, the boutique manager rushed over.

"Miss Rutherford, please.

Perhaps we should continue your fitting privately."

Celeste laughed.

"Why?

I’m enjoying myself."

I reached into my handbag.

Celeste smirked.

"Looking for tissues?"

"No."

"A lawyer’s business card?"

"No."

"A coupon?"

Two people visibly winced.

My fingers closed around the black folder in my bag.

Then the front doors opened.

Cold air swept through the showroom.

Every employee turned.

The manager went pale.

A tall man in a charcoal overcoat walked in with three executives behind him.

Everyone knew him.

He crossed the room without greeting anyone.

He stopped in front of me.

Then he looked at the coffee stain on my coat.

His face changed.

And in front of the entire salon, he lowered himself onto one knee.

What he said next made Celeste’s smile vanish before anyone even knew what was inside my folder.
