Chapter 2: The Gold Seal

“Mother,” he said, his voice dangerously calm.

“Tell me who did this to you.”

Celeste’s face lost all color.

I touched my son’s shoulder.

“Stand up.

I’m all right.”

“No, you’re not.” He rose and faced the room.

“Who threw the coffee?”

“It was an accident,” Celeste said quickly.

The sales associate stared at her.

“No, it wasn’t.”

The manager stepped between them.

“Perhaps we can settle this privately.”

My son’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?

So you can protect Miss Rutherford?”

Celeste lifted her chin.

“Do you know who my father is?”

“Yes,” he replied.

“The question is whether he knows what you’ve been doing with his name.”

Her confidence cracked.

Then my son pointed toward the ceiling.

“Save the security footage.”

The manager swallowed.

“The cameras aren’t working.”

“That’s not true,” the sales associate whispered.

She pulled out her phone.

“He ordered me to delete the recording—but I sent a copy to myself.”

The manager lunged toward her, but one of the executives blocked his path.

I finally removed the black folder from my handbag and placed it on the counter.

Celeste saw the gold seal on its cover and froze.

“No,” she whispered.

“That agreement was canceled.”

I opened the folder.

“It wasn’t canceled,” I said.

“And your signature is on the final page.”

Then my son looked at Celeste and asked the one question she clearly wasn’t prepared to answer.
