Chapter 1: The Day She Stopped Pretending

"It was just a joke!" My daughter-in-law yanked my chair away as I sat, sending me crashing to the floor.
I couldn't get up from the pain.
She laughed—but my son stood, faced her, and said...
It was supposed to be an ordinary Sunday dinner in Daniel's suburban Columbus, Ohio home.
I had brought apple pie, helped Lily with her science project, and spent most of the afternoon ignoring Rachel's little comments about my age.
I had learned, over seven years, that responding to her usually made things worse.
"It was just a joke!" my daughter-in-law, Rachel, laughed after pulling my chair away as I sat, sending me hard onto the kitchen floor.
Pain shot through my hip and lower back.
For a few seconds, I couldn't breathe.
My palms slipped against the polished tile when I tried to push myself up, but my right leg trembled beneath me.
Rachel stood over me, still smiling.
"Mom, you're too serious.
Can't you take a joke?"
Everyone at the table heard her—my two grandchildren, Rachel's sister, my son Daniel, even our neighbor Mark, who had stopped by to return a ladder.
But Daniel didn't laugh.
He rose slowly, his face drained of color, and faced his wife.
"Get your coat," he said.
Rachel blinked.
"What?"
"Get your coat and your keys.
You're leaving."
Her smile disappeared.
"Daniel, don't be ridiculous."
He pointed toward the front door.
"You pulled a chair away from a sixty-eight-year-old woman while she was sitting down.
She's on the floor and can't stand.
You don't get to call that a joke."
The room went silent.
Rachel folded her arms.
"She always acts fragile when I'm around.
I barely touched the chair."
I looked at my son.
I had never seen him look at her that way—not angry exactly, but finished.
Daniel knelt beside me and told me not to move.
Then he asked Mark to call 911.
That was when Rachel's confidence cracked.
"911?
Are you serious?
You're going to turn this into some huge thing?"
Daniel didn't even glance at her.
"You already made it huge."
The paramedics arrived within minutes.
They fitted a brace around my neck, checked my hip, and lifted me carefully onto a stretcher.
Rachel hovered near the doorway, muttering that everyone was overreacting.
As they wheeled me out, my granddaughter Lily, twelve years old, grabbed Daniel's sleeve.
"Dad," she whispered, "Mom did it on purpose."
Rachel snapped her head toward her.
"Lily!"
Daniel froze.
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
"She told Aunt Megan before Grandma came in.
She said, 'Watch this.
She needs to loosen up.'"
Rachel went pale.
Megan stared at the floor.
Daniel turned to his wife.
"Did you plan this?"
Rachel opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
From the stretcher, I watched my son's face change.
What had begun as shock became something colder.
"Don't be here when I get back from the hospital," he said.
And for the first time that day, Rachel had nothing to laugh about.
---
What will Daniel do when he finds out how far Rachel's cruelty really goes?
And what does Megan know that she hasn't said yet?
