At the hospital, the doctor said I had a hairline fracture in my hip.
Nothing that required surgery, but enough to keep me off my feet for weeks.
Daniel sat beside my bed and didn't speak for a long time.
Then his phone lit up.
It was a message from Megan.
He read it once.
Then again.
His jaw tightened.
"What is it?" I asked.
He turned the screen toward me.
*"This isn't the first time.
She did something similar to your mom at Christmas.
I should have said something sooner.
I'm sorry, Daniel.
There's more you need to know."*
I stared at the words.
"Christmas," I said quietly.
"I thought I just lost my balance on the step."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"She told me you'd been drinking," he said.
"I believed her."
The silence between us was heavy.
Then his phone rang.
It was Rachel.
He let it ring.
It rang again.
On the third call, he answered and put it on speaker.
"Daniel, just come home," Rachel said.
"The kids need their father.
Your mother is fine.
You're making this bigger than it is."
Daniel's voice was steady and quiet.
"Megan texted me."
The line went completely silent.
Then Rachel said one word that made my bl00d run cold.
*"How much did she tell you?"*
