Chapter 1: The Night He Showed Me Exactly Who He Was

"Mom, don't cry," Tobin whispered, his twelve-year-old fingers tightening around mine.

"Watch me handle them."

Across the Vellmore Hotel ballroom, my husband walked in with another woman on his arm.

And pinned above her heart, glittering under four hundred guests and a sky of chandeliers, was my late grandmother's gold wheat brooch.

Three weeks ago, Wade had lifted it from my palm and promised to get the loose clasp fixed.

I trusted him.

I'd trusted him for fifteen years.

I trusted him when I worked sixteen-hour shifts in our first restaurant with a borrowed stove.

When I sold my grandmother's farm in Ashby Hollow to cover payroll.

When I let the press call him "the visionary" while I stood in the kitchen, sleeves soaked, building every menu that made his name.

Now Kendra Sloane — his brand director, twenty-nine, in red silk — stopped at my table and touched the brooch like it was hers.

"It suits me better, don't you think?"

Then her wine glass tipped.

A dark red stain spread across my lap.

Some people gasped.

Some people laughed.

Wade didn't even glance down.

He leaned close, smiling for the cameras, and said the words that turned my bl00d to ice:

"After tonight, you're just the cook, Noelle.

Go clean yourself up.

You're embarrassing me."

I couldn't breathe.

My face burned.

Every eye in that ballroom was on me — the wife who didn't know her place.

But my son was already standing.

Wade's team had written him a sweet little speech for the anniversary program.

It was printed on cream cardstock with the new company logo in the corner.

Tobin walked to the stage, took the microphone, and tore the card neatly in half.

Wade's smile froze.

"My dad says my mom signed her half of the company away on March fourteenth," Tobin said, his voice shaking but loud.

"That's weird.

Because on March fourteenth, she was sitting next to me in the emergency room all night."

The ballroom went dead silent.

Wade started toward the stage.

Fast.

And that was when I saw his hand reach for my son's arm.

What does Wade do when he reaches Tobin — and what does Noelle do next?
