Chapter 2: The Woman Who Had Been There All Along

— PART 2 —

I was on my feet before Wade reached the third step.

"Don't you touch him."

My voice came out low.

Steady.

I didn't recognize it as my own.

Wade stopped.

For just a second, something crossed his face — not guilt.

Calculation.

"Noelle." He said my name like a warning.

"The boy is confused.

He doesn't understand what he's saying."

"He understands perfectly," I said.

"And so does everyone in this room."

Four hundred people hadn't moved.

Hadn't breathed.

Tobin still held the microphone.

His hands were shaking, but he didn't step back.

Then a voice came from the far side of the ballroom.

"She's right.

I was there too."

I turned.

It was Donna — our head of accounts.

Fifteen years with the company.

She was standing at her table, phone in hand, face pale but certain.

"I drove Noelle to the hospital that night.

I sat with Tobin in the waiting room for two hours." She paused.

"I also processed the signature paperwork that came through the next morning.

And Noelle never signed anything."

Kendra's hand moved slowly to the brooch.

Wade's jaw tightened.

"That document is legal," he said quietly.

"My lawyers reviewed it."

"Then your lawyers," Donna said, "should look at the timestamp."

The room shifted.

I watched Wade's confidence crack — just slightly.

Just enough.

And that was when Kendra leaned close to his ear and whispered something that made him go completely still.

---

What Donna found in that timestamp — and what Kendra whispered — changes everything.
