Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Secret
Vanessa appeared on the screen in a private room at Rosewood Estate.
My mother stood beside her, holding a thick envelope.
A date flashed in the corner.
It had been recorded that morning.
Graham’s voice shook.
“What is this?”
“I heard Aunt Vanessa say my name,” Lily whispered.
“So I followed her.”
On-screen, Vanessa pushed the envelope across a table.
“Once I marry Graham, Claire and that child are out of our lives for good.”
My mother smiled.
“And if Graham asks about the missing money?”
“We blame Claire.
Everyone already thinks she’s desperate.”
The ballroom erupted in horrified whispers.
I could barely breathe.
“Missing money?
What are they talking about?”
Vanessa rushed toward the DJ.
“It’s fake!
Turn it off!”
Graham stepped between her and Lily.
“No,” he said coldly.
“Let it play.”
The video continued as a man’s hand reached for the envelope.
Vanessa leaned closer to him.
“You abandoned Claire once.
Now help me make sure Graham never trusts her.”
My knees nearly gave way.
I knew that hand.
I knew the silver wedding band still hanging from its finger.
Then the man turned toward Lily’s hidden camera.
It was my ex-husband.
But before anyone could speak, he looked directly into the lens and said, “Vanessa, there’s something you don’t know about Graham.”
