Chapter 3: The Account in My Name

The video shook as Lily’s hidden camera moved behind a half-open door.

Daniel—my former husband—placed both hands on the table.

“Graham already knows money is missing,” he said on-screen.

“He asked me to trace it.”

Vanessa’s recorded smile vanished.

“What did you tell him?”

“Nothing yet.”

My mother gripped the envelope.

“You promised to cooperate.”

“I promised to examine the records,” Daniel replied.

“I never promised to frame Claire.”

Beside me, Lily caught my sleeve.

“Mom, I didn’t know Dad would be there.”

I pulled her against me.

“You should never have had to hear any of this.”

Vanessa pointed at the screen.

“He edited it.

Daniel has hated me for years.”

Graham did not look at her.

“Daniel gave me no video.”

“Then Claire arranged it!”

“I didn’t even know he was back in Newport,” I said.

My mother stepped onto the dance floor.

“Claire has always been jealous of her sister.

Look at her standing there, enjoying this.”

“Enjoying it?” My voice cracked.

“You called my daughter useless in front of three hundred people.”

“She ruined Vanessa’s wedding!”

“No,” Graham said.

“Vanessa did that herself.”

He removed the boutonniere from his jacket and set it beside the broken glass.

“The Ellison Family Scholarship Fund is missing two hundred thousand dollars.

Vanessa had temporary access because she was organizing the charity gala.”

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“And Claire prepared the donor lists.”

“I helped at the school for one afternoon,” I said.

“That’s all.”

The screen showed Daniel opening the envelope.

Inside were transfer forms bearing my name.

My signature appeared at the bottom of every page.

I stared at it.

“That isn’t mine.”

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

“It certainly looks like yours.”

Lily stepped in front of me.

“My mom doesn’t write her C like that.”

Every face turned toward her.

She raised the thank-you card I had helped her write for Graham’s wedding gift.

“Mom makes a loop.

That signature doesn’t.”

Graham took the card and compared it with the screen.

“She’s right.”

Vanessa seized Lily’s wrist.

“You little liar.”

“Let her go!” I pulled Lily back and placed myself between them.

“You will never touch my child again.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Be careful, Claire.

Teachers can lose their jobs over financial investigations.”

Graham faced her.

“Was that a threat?”

“It was advice.”

The ballroom doors opened.

Two estate security officers entered with a woman in a gray suit carrying a leather folder.

Vanessa smiled for the first time since the video began.

“Good.

Tell them to remove Claire.”

The woman looked at me.

“Claire Bennett?”

“Yes?”

“I’m Mara Chen, the bank’s fraud investigator.

A transfer of two hundred thousand dollars was completed twenty minutes ago.”

“Into whose account?” Graham asked.

Mara opened the folder.

“An account registered to Claire Bennett.”

My mother folded her arms.

“There.

Now perhaps everyone understands who the real liar is.”

Mara turned one page toward me.

At the bottom, beside my name, was a photograph taken at a bank counter.

The woman in the photograph had my hair, my navy coat—and Vanessa’s wedding ring on her hand.
