Chapter 4: The Price of His Silence

Daniel asked Mr.

Bell for a private room.

I shook my head.

“You laughed in front of everyone,” I said.

“You can explain in front of everyone.”

Vanessa leaned close to him.

“You don’t owe her an explanation.”

“He owes me the truth.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“Vanessa gave me a blank authorization form last night.”

“And you initialed it?”

“She said it was for the band’s overtime.”

Mr.

Bell tapped the page.

“The amount was added afterward.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“Daniel is a grown man.

Stop treating him like a child.”

“I’m asking why my son approved charges against my account.”

“He didn’t know,” Daniel said.

“Not all of it.”

Vanessa took out her phone.

“Would you like me to show everyone who did know?”

Daniel moved toward her.

“Don’t.”

She held the phone against her chest.

“Then make your mother stop.”

I looked at him.

“Stop what?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Mom, maybe you should have stayed home today.”

The room seemed to tilt.

My hand found the back of a chair, but I missed it.

Elena caught my elbow.

“Sit down, Mrs.

Hart.”

“I’m fine.”

“No, you aren’t.” She guided me into the chair and placed her clean white shawl over my stained dress.

“And you do not have to pretend in front of me.”

Daniel took one step forward.

“Mom—”

“Don’t touch her,” Elena said.

Vanessa laughed.

“Now the server is giving family orders?”

Elena faced her.

“My mother was placed behind a pillar at my sister’s wedding.

She smiled until she reached the kitchen, then cried beside the dishwasher.

I said nothing that day.

I won’t make that mistake twice.”

My eyes filled before I could stop them.

Elena crouched beside me and held both my hands.

“I spent his whole life arriving whenever he called,” I whispered.

Daniel’s shoulders dropped.

“And today,” I said, “you watched her humiliate me.”

“I was trying to keep the peace.”

“No.

You were asking me to carry the pain so she wouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable.”

He looked at the floor.

“You’re right.”

Vanessa stepped between us.

“This little performance changes nothing.”

Elena stood.

“It changes one thing.”

She took her phone from her apron.

“This morning, I started recording after you told me to forge the manager’s approval code.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

“You recorded me without permission?”

“I recorded my conversation at the desk.”

“That file belongs to the hotel.”

“Then the hotel should hear it,” Mr.

Bell said.

Vanessa lunged for the phone.

Elena pulled it back, and Mr.

Bell moved between them.

“Touch my employee again,” he said, “and security will escort you out.”

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

“What else is on that recording?”

“Nothing,” she said quickly.

Elena pressed the screen.

Vanessa’s recorded voice filled the silent ballroom.

“Put Eleanor behind the flowers.

Remove the dance.

By dessert, she’ll make a scene.

Once Daniel sees how unstable she is, he’ll sign whatever I put in front of him.”

A man’s voice answered through the speaker.

“And if she doesn’t make a scene?”

Vanessa laughed on the recording.

“Then I’ll put the cake in her face myself.”

Daniel turned slowly toward his wife.

May you like

But I recognized the man’s voice too.

It belonged to Vanessa’s father—and he had just entered the ballroom carrying a leather briefcase.
