Chapter 5: The Message From My Own Account

Martin Vale walked past the guests without looking at them.
He set his briefcase on the cake table and faced Elena.
“Delete that recording.”
“No,” she replied.
“I am an attorney.
You may have violated privacy laws.”
Mr.
Bell held out his hand.
“Give the phone to hotel security, Elena.”
Martin blocked her path.
“If she distributes that file, I will make sure she never works in this city again.”
I stood and removed Elena’s shawl from my shoulders.
“You threatened the wrong employee in the wrong hotel.”
Martin turned to me.
“Eleanor, this spectacle has gone far enough.”
“You helped plan it.”
“I gave my daughter advice about protecting her marriage.”
“By humiliating me?”
Vanessa moved beside him.
“You were supposed to lose your temper.
That was all.”
Daniel recoiled.
“That was all?”
“You’ve spent years saying she controls you.”
“I said she worries about me.”
“You said you wanted your share of the company.”
I looked at Daniel.
“What share?”
Martin opened his briefcase and removed a printed email.
“The fifteen percent you promised the couple,” he said.
“Vanessa was protecting an agreement you intended to withdraw.”
“I promised no shares.”
He passed the email to Daniel.
“Read it.”
Daniel’s eyes moved down the page.
“Mom, this came from your address.”
“Read it aloud.”
He swallowed.
“‘After the wedding, I will transfer fifteen percent of Hart Hospitality to Daniel and Vanessa as my gift.’”
Several guests shifted closer.
Martin smiled.
“Now we understand why Eleanor invented this accusation.
Thirty-eight thousand dollars is a distraction from a multimillion-dollar promise.”
Mr.
Bell reached for the email.
“May I see the header?”
Martin pulled it back.
“You are a hotel manager, not a digital investigator.”
Vanessa raised her voice.
“My father has the email.
Daniel has seen it.
How much more proof do you need?”
Daniel looked at me.
“I saw the message on my phone three weeks ago.”
“And you never asked me about it?”
“You had been talking about stepping back.”
“From daily operations.
Not from ownership.”
Vanessa held up both hands.
“There.
She admits there were discussions.”
For the first time, guests began looking at me instead of her.
Martin saw it and pressed harder.
“Eleanor, apologize to my daughter, authorize the charges, and honor the transfer.
In return, this family embarrassment ends here.”
“You are offering me a deal?”
“I am offering you a dignified exit.”
Elena touched my arm.
“Mrs.
Hart, don’t sign anything.”
Martin pointed at her.
“One more word and you will be named in the lawsuit.”
Mr.
Bell’s phone vibrated.
He read the screen, then looked at me.
“Our systems director has traced the email login.”
Martin snapped his briefcase shut.
“That proves nothing.”
“It proves the message was not sent from Mrs.
Hart’s home or office.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She could send it from anywhere.”
Mr.
Bell turned his phone so Daniel could see.
“The login came from your apartment at 2:14 in the morning.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“I was asleep.”
I asked the question he seemed unable to form.
“Who used your computer?”
Vanessa stepped backward.
Mr.
Bell’s phone vibrated again.
He opened a security image taken from the lobby camera of Daniel’s building.
May you like
The person carrying Daniel’s laptop was not Vanessa.
It was Martin Vale.
