Chapter 6: The Son Who Kept a Copy

Colin shut the ballroom doors behind him.

The expensive watch on his wrist caught the light as he approached us.

“Did you intend to take care of Daniel?” I asked.

Adrian answered first.

“That phrase meant removing him from the company.”

“I asked Colin.”

Colin pulled off the watch and set it beside Vanessa’s Bentley key.

“Adrian told me to erase the archive footage.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“Did you?”

“I erased the visible files.”

Adrian smiled.

“There.

You have your answer.”

Colin looked at him.

“I copied them first.”

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

“Where are they?” Grace asked.

“In a secure account.”

“What do they show?”

“Adrian entering Eleanor’s office after midnight.

Mother was with him.”

Margaret walked into the room before he finished.

“You ungrateful fool.”

Colin turned.

“You said we were protecting the family.”

“We were.”

“You copied Eleanor’s signature.”

Margaret looked at me.

“Your husband built this company while you sat behind your father’s name.”

“My father built it.”

“And my son doubled its value.”

“With money taken from employees,” Daniel said.

She waved him silent.

“Every dollar would have been returned.”

“After Adrian gained control of my shares?” I asked.

Margaret stepped closer.

“Withdraw the suspension and give him five years.

The accounts will be restored.”

“That is your offer?”

“It is mercy.”

“For whom?”

“For you.” She lowered her voice.

“Fight us, and the Vale Community Clinic loses its building.”

Grace’s head lifted.

“What did you do?”

Adrian took a loan document from his jacket.

“The clinic’s property secures a company credit line.

If the board removes me, the lender can demand immediate repayment.”

“That clinic treated my mother.”

“And now you understand the price of pride.”

I reached for the document, but he pulled it back.

“Restore my authority,” Adrian said.

“I will protect the clinic, Daniel keeps his pension, and Vanessa walks away without being named.”

Vanessa raised the black phone.

“You mean without telling anyone you used me.”

“You used me too.”

“No,” she said.

“I was foolish.

You were deliberate.”

Margaret faced Colin.

“Delete your copy, and you can take Daniel’s position.”

Colin stared at her.

“You would buy your own son?”

“I am offering you a future.”

“You gave Adrian the company and handed me errands.”

“I gave each son what he deserved.”

Colin’s mouth tightened.

“Then you deserve this.”

He opened his phone and sent the archive files to Grace.

Margaret lunged for it, but Vanessa stepped between them.

“Don’t touch him.”

Margaret looked at Vanessa with contempt.

“You think Eleanor will forgive you?”

“I didn’t do it for forgiveness.”

Grace checked her email.

“The files arrived.”

Adrian tore the loan document in half.

“Without the original agreement, you cannot stop the lender.”

Daniel opened the red folder.

“Her father anticipated that.”

He removed a sealed letter bearing the same private seal used on the forged transfers.

“What is that?” I asked.

“A codicil your father gave me one week before he passed.

Any unauthorized pledge against the clinic automatically transfers the building into a protected charitable trust.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You said nothing.”

“You never asked what happened if you betrayed her.”

My phone buzzed.

A message from Adrian appeared even though he stood only a few feet away.

COME TO THE ARCHIVE ROOM ALONE.

A photograph followed.

It showed boxes of original financial records beside an industrial shredder.
