Chapter 1: The Initials on My Sleeve

My classmate ridiculed my patched dress at our school awards ceremony.
Moments later, the guest of honor stared at my sleeve and announced to the entire hall that I was his long-lost daughter.
Brielle clutched the patched hem of my dress before everyone.
“Did you sew this from leftovers?” she laughed.
The entire room burst into laughter.
I lowered my eyes, fighting back tears, and walked silently to the back row.
Then Principal Harris took the stage to announce the highest academic honor.
“This year’s winner is Amara Cole.”
Brielle’s smile immediately vanished as I approached the stage in my patched blue dress.
As I stepped up, Mr.
Bennett abruptly stood, staring straight at my sleeve.
His hand started trembling as his eyes locked onto the small stitched initials: “A.C.”
He stepped toward me, eyes brimming with tears.
“Where did you get that dress?” he asked.
“My mother made it before she disappeared,” I whispered.
Mr.
Bennett went completely still.
“That's my daughter,” he said aloud in front of everyone.
I stood frozen as Brielle stared in utter shock.
Mr.
Bennett reached inside his jacket and carefully pulled out an old photograph...
