Chapter 2: The Call That Silenced the Hall

The photograph showed Mr.
Bennett beside a young woman holding a baby wrapped in the same blue fabric as my dress.
“That’s my mother,” I gasped.
“And that baby is you,” he said, turning the photograph over.
Written on the back were my name and birth date.
Brielle pushed forward.
“This is ridiculous.
She probably planned this for attention.”
“Enough,” Principal Harris said sharply.
Mr.
Bennett pointed to the stitching on my sleeve.
“My wife embroidered those initials before Amara vanished.
No one else knew about them.”
My knees weakened.
“Then why didn’t you find me?”
“I searched for sixteen years,” he whispered.
“Someone changed your records and made me believe you were gone forever.”
The hall fell silent.
Suddenly, Principal Harris’s secretary hurried onto the stage holding a sealed envelope.
“Sir, this was delivered for Amara this morning,” she said.
“But there’s something else.
A woman just called the school.”
Mr.
Bennett turned pale.
“What woman?”
The secretary looked directly at me.
“She claims she’s Amara’s mother—and she said Mr.
Bennett must never be allowed to take her home.”
