“The power of attorney,” I said.

“The one that gave you control of your mother’s accounts.”

Daniel stopped inches from me.

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

“That has nothing to do with our wedding.”

“It has everything to do with it,” I replied.

“This morning, someone tried to transfer $250,000 from Margaret’s retirement account.”

Margaret gripped my arm.

“Daniel told me those papers were for the wedding deposit.”

A murmur spread through the guests.

“That’s a lie!” Daniel shouted.

“Mom knew what she signed.”

“Then why did you recognize the revocation before I told you what it was?”

Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

“Don’t say another word.”

That frightened look between them told me more than any confession could.

Then a woman near the back rose from her chair, holding up her phone.

“My name is Laura Bennett,” she said.

“I work at the bank—and I received the transfer request.”

Daniel turned pale.

Laura walked toward us and placed her phone beside the microphone.

“But Daniel wasn’t the person who submitted it,” she said.

“The name attached to the request was—”

Before she could finish, Vanessa lunged for the phone.
