Chapter 7: The Message Daniel Could Not Deny

Vanessa held the phone where Daniel could see it.

“Tell them,” she said.

“Or I will.”

Daniel leaned against the table.

“Give me the phone.”

“No.

You promised we would control the trust before the wedding.”

“That was before I knew you forged Mom’s name.”

“You gave me her security code.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

I stepped between my son and Vanessa.

“Is that true?”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“I said the code aloud months ago.

I didn’t know she saved it.”

Vanessa scrolled through the messages.

“Here is one from Daniel: ‘Once the guardianship is approved, Dad can’t stop us.’”

Helen held out her hand.

“Send me the entire conversation.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Withdraw the deed challenge and authorize the transfer.

Then perhaps these messages disappear.”

“You are trying to bargain with money that is not yours,” I said.

“I’m offering to protect your son.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Dad, if those messages reach the court, I could lose everything.”

Margaret lifted her cane from the floor.

“What exactly are you asking us to lose instead?”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Mom, please.”

“No.

Say it plainly.”

He could not.

Evelyn took Vanessa’s wrist.

“Unlock the phone.”

“Let go of me.”

“I paid your rent for two years because you said you were struggling,” Evelyn said.

“You used my savings for designer dresses while Margaret paid for this wedding.”

“You never gave me enough.”

“I gave until I had to choose between groceries and my electric bill.”

Vanessa stared at her mother.

“That was your choice.”

Evelyn released her as if burned.

Laura’s phone chimed.

“The bank recovered the full login history.

The transfer was prepared from Vanessa’s laptop, but Daniel approved the new payee from his phone.”

Daniel sank into a chair.

“I thought it was the caterer,” he said.

“The payee was called VMC Events,” Laura replied.

“You never checked?”

“No.”

Vanessa gave a cold laugh.

“He checked.

He just thought we would get away with it.”

Daniel looked at Helen.

“If I give you every message, will you help my mother?”

“I represent your parents,” Helen said.

“You need your own attorney.”

“I’m asking whether the truth will help her.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stood and held out his hand to Vanessa.

“The phone.”

She stepped back.

“Choose carefully.”

“For once, I am.”

Vanessa pressed the screen, trying to erase the conversation.

Laura raised her own phone.

“The bank copied the messages attached to the transfer review an hour ago.”

Chloe lifted hers.

“And Vanessa sent screenshots to the bridesmaids last night.

She said she would be richer than all of us by Monday.”

Vanessa looked around the room.

No one lowered their eyes.

Helen’s phone rang.

She listened, then handed it to Margaret.

“Judge Alvarez is holding an emergency video hearing,” she said.

“He wants to hear directly from you.”

Margaret took the phone with both hands.

“My name is Margaret Hale,” she said.

“I know where I am, I know what I own, and I know exactly who tried to take it.”

The judge asked several questions.

Margaret answered every one without looking at Daniel.

After ten minutes, Helen closed the call.

“The guardianship order is suspended,” she said.

“The accounts remain frozen only to prevent further transfers.

Thomas and Margaret retain control.”

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

Two county investigators were waiting in the corridor.

She stopped and turned toward Daniel.

“You weak little coward,” she said.

“Without me, you will always be the boy begging his parents for permission.”

Daniel met her eyes.

“Maybe,” he said.

“But I would rather face what I did than become what you are.”

One investigator took Vanessa’s phone.

The other held out a document for her to read.

Vanessa looked at Margaret.

“This family deserved me,” she said.

“You were all pretending long before I arrived.”

Margaret stepped closer.

“No, Vanessa.

We made mistakes.

You made a plan.”

The investigator escorted Vanessa down the corridor, but Daniel was not allowed to follow us home.

The second investigator placed a hand on his shoulder.

May you like

“Mr.

Hale,” she said, “we need to discuss your part in the transfer.”
