Chapter 2: The Name Beneath Mine

I followed the manager into the ballroom, staying several steps behind him.

He spoke quietly to Tiffany.

“The extended bar, transportation, honeymoon suite, and tomorrow’s brunch have been canceled by the contract holder.”

Tiffany’s face tightened.

“You can’t do that!” she shouted.

“This is my wedding!”

Daniel finally looked at me.

“Mom, what did you do?”

“What you allowed her to do to me told me everything,” I said.

“You watched her humiliate me and stayed silent.”

“She was upset,” Daniel whispered.

“You didn’t have to ruin our night.”

Tiffany grabbed his arm.

“Don’t beg her.

Put everything on her card again.”

The manager shook his head.

“That cardholder has withdrawn authorization.”

Then he opened the folder and frowned.

“There’s another problem,” he said.

“A request was submitted yesterday to add twelve thousand dollars in upgrades.”

I stared at him.

“I never approved that.”

Daniel went pale.

Tiffany stepped backward.

“She’s confused.

She signed it.”

The manager removed a page and held it toward me.

The signature looked like mine—but it wasn’t.

Before I could speak, Daniel whispered, “Tiffany…

tell me you didn’t.”

She didn’t answer.

Then the manager pointed to the witness name beneath the false signature.

It was someone Daniel recognized immediately.
