Chapter 1: The Place They Gave Me

My daughter told me to eat in the kitchen like a servant after I cooked for eight hours.

She had no idea I was about to seize full control of everything she tried to st*al from me.

I spent eight hours cooking Sunday dinner for my entire family.

My daughter Claire looked me in the eye with a perfect smile.

'Mom, why don't you eat after everyone's finished?' she said softly.

'It'll be easier if you stay in the kitchen.'

Nobody stood up for me.

My son-in-law continued buttering his bread.

My sister-in-law examined her paper napkin.

Even the neighbors stared at their plates in silence.

I untied my apron and set it on the counter.

Then I lifted the heavy roast and stepped right out the front door.

I drove home and ate dinner alone on my best china.

The next morning, I discovered a folder Claire had left behind.

She had secretly completed bank authorization forms and financial transfers.

She believed I was too confused to notice.

I phoned my bank and locked her out of every account.

Then I contacted a lawyer.

The next day, Claire stormed into my house, trembling with rage.

'You changed the passwords behind my back?' she screamed.

'You don't manage me anymore,' I said calmly.

Her eyes filled with fury.

'I'll make sure everyone knows you are destroying this family.'

I reached for a large cream envelope on the side table.

Her face went pale as she stared at it.

'What did you sign, Mom?' she whispered.

I smiled calmly, and her hands began to shake.
