Chapter 2: The Second Folder

I slid the cream envelope across the table.

Claire snatched it up, but I placed my hand over the flap.

“This revokes every financial authority you thought you had,” I said.

“My lawyer filed it this morning.”

“You can’t do that,” she snapped.

“I’ve been managing everything for you.”

“No, Claire.

You’ve been managing me.”

Her face tightened.

“Who put these ideas in your head?”

“The bank did—after someone tried to transfer forty thousand dollars from my savings.”

For one second, Claire stopped breathing.

Then she laughed.

“You’re confused.

That money was for your care.”

“I never approved any transfer.”

Her phone lit up on the table.

A message appeared before she could turn it over.

DANIEL: Did she find the second folder?

Daniel was my son-in-law.

I looked from the message to Claire.

“What second folder?”

She grabbed her phone and backed toward the door.

“You don’t understand,” she whispered.

“Daniel said we had no choice.”

Just then, someone knocked.

My lawyer stood outside holding a thin blue file.

“Don’t let Claire leave,” he said.

“The signature on these documents isn’t yours—and that isn’t the worst thing we found.”

Claire’s hand froze on the doorknob.
