Chapter 1: The Image on the Screen

My daughter was bent over in pain, gripping her stomach on the hospital bed.

The doctor stared at the ultrasound screen, gasped, and summoned the chief of surgery immediately.

I gripped my teenage daughter's trembling hand.

'It's just a severe stomach ache, right?' I whispered.

The doctor switched off the screen with shaking hands.

His face was ghostly pale.

'Mrs.

Davis, this isn't a medical illness,' he said.

My husband rose, his fists clenched.

'What are you talking about?' he demanded.

The doctor gestured to the black-and-white scan image.

'Someone placed an encrypted tracking chip near her kidney.'

My daughter went still.

A tear slid down her pale cheek.

'They found me,' she whispered.

My husband and I shared a look of pure terror.

'Who found you?' I pleaded.

She glanced at the door and trembled softly.

'The people who b0ught me from dad five years ago.'

What will Mrs.

May you like

Davis do—and how will her husband react?
