Chapter 2: The Message on His Phone

For one breath, nobody moved.

I stared at my husband.

“What does she mean, ‘from dad’?”

“She’s confused,” he snapped.

“She’s in pain.

She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

My daughter pulled her hand from his reach.

“Don’t touch me.”

His face changed.

The doctor stepped between them.

“Sir, you need to remain calm.”

“I’m her father!”

“No,” my daughter whispered.

“You’re the man who s0ld me.”

My knees nearly gave way.

“Five years ago, you disappeared for three days.

Your father said you ran away.”

“I didn’t run away,” she sobbed.

“He took me to a house and signed papers.

I escaped, but he told me it was only a nightmare.”

My husband backed toward the door.

“This is insane.”

Then the chief of surgery rushed in holding a small scanner.

“The chip just activated,” she said.

“Someone knows she’s here.”

My husband’s phone immediately began ringing.

My daughter saw the number and screamed.

“That’s them!”

I grabbed the phone before he could hide it.

A message glowed across the screen:

“Payment overdue.

We’re coming for the girl—and this time, your wife learns what you promised us.”

My husband looked at me and whispered, “You were never supposed to see that.”
