Chapter 2: The Message on Brooke’s Phone

“The blue envelope is gone from the hotel safe!” the waiter shouted.
“Someone used Isabella’s staff card to enter your private office.”
My hand dropped as I turned toward Isabella.
Her face went pale.
“I didn’t take anything,” she said.
“My card disappeared after Brooke bumped into me near the kitchen.”
“That’s a lie!” Brooke snapped.
“She’s trying to protect herself.”
Chad pointed at Isabella.
“Search her before she leaves.”
“No one touches her,” I said, stepping between them.
“Bring me the security records.”
The waiter held up a tablet.
“The camera outside your office was disabled, sir.
But another camera caught someone leaving.”
Brooke’s smile vanished.
“Show him,” Isabella whispered.
Before the waiter could turn the screen toward me, Chad lunged forward and knocked the tablet from his hand.
It struck the floor, but the frozen image remained visible.
A woman wearing Brooke’s silver dress was standing outside my office, holding the blue envelope.
“That proves nothing,” Brooke said quickly.
“Anyone could have worn that dress.”
Then her phone lit up on the table.
The message on the screen read: “Did he discover what you changed in his father’s documents?”
Brooke reached for it, but I picked up the phone first.
