Chapter 2: The Aldermoor Account

Warren's eyes moved slowly from Giulietta to the men filling the hallway.
He counted six.
Then stopped counting.
Preston was still on the sofa, holding his wrist, not saying a word.
"You have no idea what you've just done," Warren said.
His voice was steady, but his hands were not.
Giulietta picked up her bouquet from the vanity.
Calmly.
Like a woman who had already decided how this day would end before it began.
"I know exactly what I've done, Mr.
Hale.
The question is whether you understand what your son just did."
Warren looked at Preston.
"Get up."
Preston didn't move.
One of the men in the hallway stepped forward and placed a folder on the vanity beside the ring.
Giulietta didn't open it.
She already knew what was inside.
"Your family has been borrowing from ours for eleven years," she said.
"My father let it continue because he believed in this union.
Preston just ended that arrangement."
Warren's face changed.
Not anger.
Something closer to fear dressed up as anger.
"You're bluffing."
Giulietta finally looked at him.
Really looked at him.
"Call your lawyer, Mr.
Hale.
Ask him about the Aldermoor account.
Then call me back."
Warren reached for his phone.
It was already ringing.
