Chapter 1: The Gift She Should Never Have Touched

My fiancée destroyed my mother's gift in front of 600 wealthy guests.
She had no idea the letter inside was about to ruin her entire family.
My fiancée grabbed my mother's gift and held it above her head.
600 wealthy guests laughed in the ballroom.
My mother stood quietly in her old blue dress.
"Let's see what kind of poor little surprise my future mother-in-law brought us!" Vanessa announced.
I stood six feet away, frozen in shock.
"Vanessa, stop," I said.
She smiled without glancing at me.
"Relax, Ethan.
I'm making the night memorable."
My mother held her worn handbag with trembling hands.
Vanessa always called my mother's clothes embarrassing.
That evening, Mom had brought a small wooden box with brass hinges.
Vanessa snatched it, opening the lid to find a folded letter on blue velvet.
"A letter?
Seriously?" she laughed.
Mom stepped forward softly.
"Vanessa, please read it carefully," Mom whispered.
Vanessa glanced at the first few lines.
Then she tore the letter in half.
She tore it again and tossed the pieces onto the marble floor.
My heart stopped.
"The ceremony doesn't begin until you apologize," I told her.
Vanessa glared at me.
"You're not ruining my wedding over a piece of paper."
I stepped between her and my mother.
"My mother is not a piece of paper."
Suddenly, the grand ballroom doors swung open.
Our family attorney walked in carrying a heavy leather folder.
He walked straight to my mother.
"Mrs.
Hale, the authenticated copies are ready," he said.
Mom looked at the torn pieces on the floor.
"The original explained what I transferred this morning."
Vanessa's smile vanished instantly.
"Transferred what?" I asked.
The attorney opened the folder.
"The documents identify a beneficiary, and the financial arrangement isn't what anyone here thinks."
