Chapter 2: The Second Envelope

Part 2 ⬇️

The ballroom went completely silent.

Vanessa looked at the attorney.

Then at my mother.

Then at the torn pieces of paper scattered on the floor.

"What financial arrangement?" she demanded.

"What are you talking about?"

The attorney didn't answer her.

He spoke only to my mother.

"Mrs.

Hale, would you like me to read the summary aloud?"

Mom nodded once.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Excuse me.

I am the bride.

Whatever this is, it involves me."

"Actually," the attorney said quietly, "it doesn't."

The room shifted.

I watched Vanessa's father rise slowly from the front table.

His face had gone pale.

"Harold," my mother said, looking directly at him.

"You knew this letter was coming."

Vanessa spun toward her father.

"Dad?

What is she talking about?"

He didn't answer.

My mother reached into her worn handbag and pulled out a second envelope.

"I brought two copies," she said.

"I suspected one might not survive the evening."

Vanessa's hand moved toward it.

My mother held it just out of reach.

"This one isn't for you, Vanessa." She looked at me.

"It's for Ethan."

My hands were shaking as I took it.

Inside was a single photograph.

I recognized the building immediately.

What I didn't recognize — was Vanessa's father standing in front of it, shaking hands with someone I never expected to see.
