Chapter 2: The Man in the Hallway

Part 2 ⬇️

I stood there holding Sophie, staring at Amanda, waiting for an explanation.

She didn't give me one.

Instead, she straightened her dress and said, "Daniel, put that phone down.

You're embarrassing yourself."

I couldn't speak.

Sophie was still trembling against my chest.

I scrolled further through the messages.

The man's name was Marcus.

There were hundreds of them going back eight months — right around the time Amanda had pushed me to put her name on the house deed.

Then I found a voice note.

I pressed play.

Amanda's voice came through the speaker, calm and clear:

*"He's so easy.

He feels guilty about Sophie having no mother.

Just keep being sweet to the kid and he'll sign anything."*

My hands went cold.

I looked up at Amanda.

For one second, something crossed her face — not guilt.

Calculation.

"You were never going to stay," I said.

She didn't deny it.

She just looked at the door.

That's when I realized someone else was standing in the hallway.

A man I had never seen before.

He was holding a folder.

And he was looking at Amanda like he was waiting for a signal.

What Daniel found inside that folder changed everything — and exposed a plan far bigger than one wedding.
