Chapter 5: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to Say

I called Daniel back at six the next morning.

He answered on the second ring.

He sounded less ragged than the night before, but not much.

"Carver," I said.

"Tell me everything."

A long pause.

Then: "His full name is Graham Carver.

He was your father's attorney and silent business partner for thirty years.

When your father d*ed, Carver inherited control of several private holdings your mother never knew existed."

"What kind of holdings?"

"Shell companies.

Real estate.

And at least one set of sealed family court records from the year we were born." Daniel's voice was flat and precise, like he'd rehearsed this a hundred times and still didn't like the shape of the words.

"I started pulling at those records three years ago.

Took that long just to find the right clerk in the right county.

When I finally got a look at what was inside — names, dates, payments — I made copies and sent them somewhere safe."

"Where?"

"A solicitor in Edinburgh.

She's been holding them since last spring."

"Does Carver know about her?"

"Not yet.

But he knows I found something.

And he's been trying to find out what and where ever since." Another careful breath.

"That's when things got dangerous.

He has people.

Not police.

Private.

They started following me.

Then they got close to Mia's school."

My hand went tight around the phone.

"He threatened your daughter."

"He didn't have to say it directly.

That's how men like Carver work." The flatness in Daniel's voice had a different texture now — something harder underneath.

"They just make sure you understand the geography.

Here is your child.

Here is where she walks.

Here is how easy it would be."

"So you sent her to us."

"Walter drove through the night.

I'd told him about the passage years ago — I'd found the plans for this house when I was researching your father's properties.

It was one of his.

He owned it before your mother inherited it.

There's a whole network of passages built into the original structure." A pause.

"I didn't plan for it to go this far.

I thought I had more time."

"How much does Emily know about Carver specifically?"

"Enough to be scared.

Not enough to know what he actually holds over people."

I walked to the kitchen window and looked out at the street.

A gray morning.

A neighbor's dog pulling at a lead.

Everything ordinary and utterly unchanged.

"Daniel.

The documents in Edinburgh.

If we get them to the right people — "

"That's exactly what Carver is trying to prevent." His voice sharpened.

"Ryan, listen to me carefully.

He is going to come at this from the legal side first.

He'll claim the records are protected.

He'll argue they were sealed for the protection of the parties involved — meaning us.

He'll try to tie it up long enough to discredit or destroy whatever the solicitor has."

"And if that doesn't work?"

Silence.

"He's not a patient man," Daniel said quietly.

"He's already put one person in a hospital."

The line held between us for a moment.

"I need you to get Mia somewhere safe," Daniel said.

"Somewhere Carver's people can't predict."

"I will."

"And Ryan — " His voice shifted.

Just slightly.

"I'm sorry.

For all of it.

You should have known about me a long time ago."

I didn't know what to say to that yet.

May you like

So I said the only true thing I had.

"Me too."
