Chapter 2: The Letter He Feared

Malik lunged toward the doors.
“Mom, wait!
Tell him to put the payment through again.”
Harold stopped but did not turn around.
“You didn’t want me at your wedding,” she said, her voice shaking.
“You only want my money inside it.”
A murmur swept through the guests.
Malik’s face reddened.
“She’s confused,” he told the manager.
“Call the bank.
I have authority over her account.”
Harold finally faced him.
“Authority?
I never gave you authority.”
The manager glanced at a message on his phone, then looked directly at Malik.
“Your mother didn’t cancel the payment,” he said.
“The bank froze it after receiving a legal notice this morning.”
“What legal notice?” I asked.
Malik stepped between us.
“This is a private family matter.”
“No,” Harold replied.
“You made it public when you threw me out.”
The manager reached into the fallen gift bag and lifted a sealed envelope.
“This was addressed to the bride,” he said, handing it to me.
Malik grabbed for it, but I pulled it against my chest.
“Don’t open that,” he warned.
Harold’s eyes filled with fresh tears.
“Open it.
Before you marry him, you deserve to know what he tried to make me sign.”
