Chapter 8: What Isabella Did Next

Grace called at noon.

"Isabella's attorney reached out this morning," she said.

"They want to discuss a private resolution before anything is formally filed."

Marcus was across the kitchen table from me, a cup of coffee going cold in front of him.

He put it on speaker.

"What kind of resolution?" he said.

"She's offering to withdraw from the property transfer and sign a full release in exchange for Marcus agreeing not to pursue criminal charges."

"No," Marcus said.

"I told them that was unlikely to be acceptable.

They came back with a second offer.

She'll withdraw, sign the release, and provide a written statement confirming Eleanor's involvement — full details — in exchange for immunity from criminal prosecution."

I looked at Marcus.

"She's turning on Eleanor," I said.

"The moment things got difficult, yes." Grace's voice was even.

"It's not a generous offer.

She's protecting herself.

But the statement about Eleanor would be useful."

"We already have the footage," Marcus said.

"We already have the property document.

What does Isabella's statement give us that we don't have?"

"Eleanor's communications.

Dates, messages, phone calls, anything that establishes a pattern of coordination over the past six months.

Isabella has all of that.

We could subpoena it, but that takes time.

Her statement gives it to us immediately." A pause.

"It also gives us something harder to get from records alone — intent.

Isabella can testify to what Eleanor said, what she knew, what she asked for.

That closes the case against Eleanor faster and more completely."

Marcus was quiet.

"What happens to Isabella?" I asked.

"Under their proposal — nothing criminal.

Civil liability for the property transfer remains possible, but she's asking us to waive that too."

"She put her foot on me," I said.

"While I was on the floor."

"I know." Grace's voice didn't change.

"That's the assault charge.

That's what she's buying her way out of."

"And if we say no?"

"We file everything.

Assault, fraud, conspiracy.

It goes through the courts.

It takes longer.

It costs more.

And there is some risk — not much, but some — that a jury looks at the footage and decides the physical contact was ambiguous."

"It was not ambiguous," I said.

"I agree with you.

But I want you to have the full picture."

I looked at Marcus.

He was looking at the table.

"She came to that hospital room to frighten me into giving up my marriage and my home," I said.

"She took off her shoe.

She stood over me while I was on the floor." I kept my voice level.

"I don't want her to walk away from that."

"Then we decline the offer," Grace said.

"Decline it," Marcus said.

"All right." A brief pause.

"I'll notify them.

Expect Isabella's attorney to escalate.

They may try to reframe the footage — claim you provoked the confrontation, that the fall was accidental, that the property transfer was based on a genuine prior agreement with Marcus.

They'll build a counter-narrative."

"Let them," Marcus said.

"I want you both prepared for it to get louder before it gets quieter." Grace's tone shifted slightly — not softer, but more direct.

"Khloe, how are you feeling?

Physically."

"The baby is fine.

I'm fine."

"Good.

Keep your next prenatal appointment.

Document everything.

If you experience any pain or complications in the coming weeks, I want to know immediately.

It goes into the record."

"Understood."

"One more thing." A pause.

"Isabella sent a message to your personal email this morning, Marcus.

Not through her attorney.

Directly."

Marcus straightened.

"What did it say?"

"She said: *You have no idea how deep this goes.

Ask your wife about Daniel.*"

The kitchen went very quiet.

Marcus looked at me.

I felt the name land the way she had intended it to — like a key turning in a lock I hadn't known was there.

May you like

"Who is Daniel?" Marcus said.

And the way he asked it — carefully, the way you ask a question when you're afraid of the answer — told me that Isabella had chosen that name for a reason.
