Chapter 2: Your Signature Did

PART 2 ⬇️

I drove home with Ellie still asleep against my shoulder and my hands completely steady on the wheel.

That surprised me.

I thought I would cry.

I didn't.

My father used to say: *The Kingsley women don't break.

They wait.*

I finally understood what he meant.

By the time I reached the house, three missed calls from Grant were already on my regular phone.

I didn't answer.

The fourth call was from a number I didn't recognize.

I answered that one.

"Mrs.

Mercer." The voice was calm.

Professional.

"My name is Daniel Holt.

I'm a senior investigator with Kingsley Family Legal.

Your father asked me to contact you if this day ever came."

I stopped walking.

"He knew?"

"He knew everything.

He just hoped he was wrong about Grant."

My throat tightened.

"The BLUEBIRD file—"

"Is only part of it." A pause.

"Mrs.

Mercer, the woman in the lobby today?

She isn't just your husband's mistress.

She's listed as Ellie's emergency legal guardian in documents filed eight months ago."

Ellie stirred against my shoulder.

I looked down at my daughter's sleeping face.

Eight months ago, she was barely two years old.

"Who authorized that?" My voice came out barely above a whisper.

Daniel's answer made me grip the phone so hard my knuckles went white.

"You did, Mrs.

Mercer.

At least…

your signature did."
