Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Person

Daniel was at the house within the hour.

He spread three new documents across the kitchen table and pointed to the first one without preamble.

"Viveca Lorne's real name is Victoria Harlen.

She changed it legally nine years ago." He tapped the page.

"Before that, she worked as a financial analyst for a private equity group called Mercer Capital Partners."

I looked up.

"Mercer."

"Not a coincidence.

Mercer Capital was founded by Grant's father, Roland Mercer, and dissolved under fraud investigation six years ago.

Roland Mercer died before charges were filed.

Viveca — Victoria — was his junior partner."

"So she and Grant have known each other since before he ever met me."

"Since he was in his mid-twenties, yes."

I sat down.

"This was never about an affair," I said.

"No." Daniel moved to the second document.

"We believe the original plan was straightforward.

Grant marries into the Kingsley family.

Gains access to the Trust through proximity.

Uses Viveca's financial expertise to identify the most efficient extraction point." He paused.

"Then your father started watching."

"And my father found BLUEBIRD."

"Your father created BLUEBIRD as a trap." Daniel's voice was careful.

"The designation looks like a standard inheritance clause.

But buried in the Trust charter, there's a provision your father added four years ago.

If anyone attempts to assume guardianship of the BLUEBIRD beneficiary through fraudulent documentation—" He slid the third page across.

"—the entire Trust immediately transfers to a protected Kingsley family foundation.

Permanently.

No individual can ever claim it."

I stared at the page.

"My father built a lock," I said.

"And he made Ellie the key to the lock — not the door."

"If Grant had succeeded in gaining legal guardianship of Ellie, he wouldn't have gained control of the Trust.

He would have triggered its permanent removal from any individual's reach.

Including his own."

"He didn't know that."

"He didn't know that."

I pressed my fingers to the table.

"So Grant and Viveca spent four years building a plan that was already defeated before it started."

"Yes.

But they don't know that yet." Daniel looked at me steadily.

"And there's one more thing."

He reached into the folder and placed a final document on top.

It was a photograph.

Surveillance quality, slightly grainy.

Two people at a restaurant table — Grant on one side, and across from him, a man I recognized immediately.

My stomach dropped.

"That's Councilman Hargrove," I said.

"Taken three weeks ago.

We've identified two additional meetings over the past four months." Daniel's voice was quiet.

"Councilman Hargrove sits on the family court oversight committee for this county."

The custody filing.

The judge assignment.

The timeline.

"Grant was trying to buy the outcome," I said.

"We believe so."

I stood up from the table.

I walked to the window.

Ellie's plastic bucket was still sitting by the flower bed, bright yellow against the dark soil.

"Daniel." I turned back.

"I need to know — is Ellie safe right now?

Physically safe?"

"We have someone outside Cecelia's house.

She has been there since this morning."

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

"All right." I turned back to the table.

"Then we move.

All of it — the recording, the insurance documents, the forged signature, the payment to Dr.

Crane, the payment to Sasha, the photograph with Hargrove.

Everything goes to the state attorney's office and to the Kingsley board simultaneously."

"If we do that, Grant will know within hours."

"Good." I picked up the satellite phone.

"I want him to know.

I want him to make one more move." I looked at Daniel.

"Because the next move he makes, he makes in front of people who are already watching."

Daniel nodded slowly.

He began gathering the documents.

Then his own phone buzzed on the table.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"What?" I asked.

He turned the phone toward me.

It was a text from the investigator stationed outside Cecelia's house.

*Unknown vehicle parked across the street for the past forty minutes.

Plates come back to a shell company.

Name on the registration: Lorne Health Associates.*

They weren't waiting for Mara to make the next move.

They were already watching Ellie.
