Chapter 2: The Guest Martha Never Expected
The special guest was Vanessa—the wealthy woman’s daughter Martha had always wanted Nick to marry.
Martha’s smile vanished.
“What is she doing here?” she demanded.
Vanessa walked toward us, her face pale.
She glanced at the braid in Martha’s hand and said, “So you actually did it.”
My stomach tightened.
“You knew she was going to c*t my hair?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I knew Martha planned to humiliate you, but she never told me how.”
“That’s a lie!” Martha shouted.
“She’s jealous because Nick chose you!”
Vanessa pulled out her phone.
“This morning, Martha offered me money to come here and announce that Nick had been seeing me behind your back.”
The guests began whispering.
Martha rushed toward her, but Nick stepped between them.
“Enough, Mom.”
Martha pointed at Vanessa.
“She has no proof!”
“Actually, she does,” Nick said.
“And that isn’t all.”
He connected Vanessa’s phone to the restaurant speakers.
Martha suddenly froze as her own recorded voice filled the room—but just before the message revealed her entire plan, she lunged for the phone.
