Chapter 7: The Room Behind the Wall

We reached Vale Engineering ten minutes behind Vivian.

The front doors were locked, but Claire led us through the loading bay.

A night guard stepped out.

“Mrs.

Vale ordered me not to admit anyone.”

Claire held up the brass key.

“My grandfather ordered that his archive remain accessible to his family.”

The guard looked at her ruined wedding dress and stepped aside.

“My wife was dismissed by Mrs.

Vale last year,” he said.

“She had worked here for thirty-two years.

I hope you find what you need.”

He handed Claire his flashlight.

“Thank you, Mr.

Lewis.”

“Make it count.”

We found Vivian and Graham outside Edmund’s old office.

Graham was prying a wooden panel from the wall.

Claire raised Anna’s phone.

“Step away.”

Vivian spun around.

“You surrendered your position in this family.”

“No,” Claire said.

“I surrendered your money.”

“You have no idea what poverty feels like.”

Dad walked into the light.

“I do.

It never made me cruel.”

Graham pulled the panel free.

Behind it stood a narrow steel door.

Claire inserted the brass key.

Vivian grabbed her arm.

“If you open that door, I will tell him the truth about you.”

I moved forward.

“Let her go.”

Claire stared at her mother.

“What truth?”

Vivian smiled at me.

“Claire signed the final transfer.”

I looked at Claire.

Her lips parted.

“What?”

“When you were twenty-one, you signed a set of trust papers,” Vivian said.

“Your signature approved the transfer into our family holding company.”

Claire’s hand fell from the lock.

“There,” Vivian whispered.

“Ask your almost-husband whether he still thinks you are innocent.”

I took the key from Claire and returned it to her palm.

“Open the door.”

“You believe me?”

“I believe the woman standing here now.

What you do next will tell me the rest.”

Claire unlocked the archive.

Inside were labeled boxes, an old computer server, and a wall safe.

Graham shoved past Peter and reached for the server cable.

Mr.

Lewis blocked him.

“Don’t touch company equipment.”

“I am company counsel.”

“Not in this room.”

Peter opened the first box.

“Payroll records.”

Dad pulled down another.

“Patent agreements.”

Claire found a file bearing her name.

Her signature appeared on the final page, but the first pages concerned an education trust.

“She hid the transfer behind my trust papers.”

Vivian folded her arms.

“You signed it.”

“I was told I was signing money Grandfather left for university.”

“You should have read it.”

“You were my mother.”

For the first time, Vivian looked away.

Anna held the phone closer.

“Say that again.”

Graham reached into the wall safe and removed a portable drive.

Peter pointed at him.

“Put that down.”

Graham ran.

Mr.

Lewis caught the back of his coat.

The drive fell and slid across the floor to Dad’s boots.

Dad picked it up.

“Is this what Edmund wanted me to find?”

A monitor flickered when Peter connected the drive.

Rows of transfers appeared—millions moved from Vale Engineering into a company carrying Graham’s initials.

Vivian stared at him.

“You said those accounts were closed.”

Graham backed toward the door.

“You authorized every payment.”

“You told me it was protected.”

“You wanted Daniel’s shares.

I made that possible.”

Claire looked at her mother.

“You risked Grandfather’s company to take what belonged to Mr.

Henderson.”

Vivian pointed at Graham.

“This was his plan.”

Graham laughed.

“The wedding insult was yours.”

A new voice came from the doorway.

“Good,” a woman said.

“Please keep blaming each other.”

Two financial investigators entered with Arthur and another director.

The woman showed her identification.

“Mr.

Lewis alerted us when Mrs.

Vale accessed a sealed archive.”

Graham glanced toward the loading bay.

The investigator held out her hand.

“Give me your phone and the drive.”

Vivian lifted her chin.

“I am the acting chair of this company.”

Arthur removed the silver company pin from his lapel and placed it on the desk.

“Not anymore.”

The investigator examined the transfer file, then looked around the room.

“There is another authorization attached to these payments,” she said.

“It belongs to someone standing in this room.”

May you like

Every face turned toward Claire.

But the investigator walked past her—and stopped in front of Arthur.
