Chapter 1: The Birthday Humiliation

“My mother-in-law shoved my birthday cake into my face in front of 70 guests, but moments later she rushed out of the restaurant in tears.
“My MIL smeared my birthday cake all over my face in front of 70 guests and laughed, calling it a ‘family tradition.’”
The whole elegant restaurant went silent as frosting dripped down my dress.
My mother-in-law towered over me, wiping her hands on a napkin while laughing uncontrollably.
“Oh, lighten up!
It’s just a harmless joke!” she cackled to the crowd.
My husband was seated right beside me, laughing along with her instead of defending me.
Tears of humiliation stung my eyes as guests murmured to one another.
I calmly picked up a cloth, wiped my eyes, and stood up from the table.
“You think humiliating people is funny?” I asked, my voice ice-cold calm.
“Oh, don’t be so sensitive,” she smirked, rolling her eyes.
I reached into my purse and pulled out a thick, sealed manila envelope.
I didn’t yell.
I simply handed it directly to her husband—my father-in-law.
“Here’s your anniversary gift early, Richard,” I said loudly so the whole room could hear.
He opened the envelope and pulled out photos of his wife with another man at a beach resort.
My mother-in-law’s face turned ghostly white.
