Chapter 2: The Message on Her Phone

Richard stared at the photos, his hands beginning to shake.
“When were these taken?” he asked.
My mother-in-law lunged for the envelope.
“They’re fake!
She planned this because she hates me!”
My husband jumped to his feet.
“How could you do this to Mom on your birthday?”
I looked straight at him.
“You’re angry with me—not with her?”
Before he could answer, Richard pulled a hotel receipt from behind the photos.
The reservation had been paid from their joint retirement account.
“You told me you were visiting your sister,” Richard said.
My mother-in-law’s confidence vanished.
“Richard, please.
I can explain.”
Then her phone lit up on the table.
A message appeared across the screen:
“Did she show him the pictures?
Your son promised he would stop her.”
Everyone close enough to read it gasped.
Richard slowly turned toward my husband.
“You knew?”
My husband’s face drained of color.
My mother-in-law grabbed her phone and rushed out of the restaurant in tears.
I expected my husband to follow her, but Richard caught his arm.
“No,” Richard said.
“You’re staying.
It’s time your wife learned what both of you have been hiding from her.”
