Chapter 1: The Night Everything Fell

My Mother-In-Law Shoved My Six-Year-Old Daughter Face-First Into The Ballroom Floor For Touching Food With Her Hands, So I Crossed The Gala And Sl\*pped Her So Hard The Whole Room Gasped.

The entire ballroom went silent.

My daughter Lily sat beside the dessert table, trembling as food scattered across her dress.

Margaret stood over her with disgust.

"You eat like an animal," she snapped.

Lily's lower lip shook.

"I'm sorry, Grandma.

I was hungry."

"You've embarrassed this entire family."

Margaret grabbed Lily's arm and pulled her up.

When Lily tried to reach for me, Margaret shoved her back down.

That was when I ran across the ballroom.

My palm struck Margaret's face before she could say another word.

Guests gasped.

Margaret slowly touched her cheek.

"You hit me?" she whispered.

"You pushed my child."

"She has no manners because you raised her poorly."

I knelt and wrapped Lily in my arms.

Her knee was bl\*\*ding, but she kept apologizing.

"Mommy, I didn't mean to ruin the party."

"You ruined nothing," I said.

Margaret turned toward the wealthy guests watching us.

"Everyone saw that woman att\*ck me."

My husband, James, pushed through the crowd.

His mother immediately began crying.

"Your wife ass\*ulted me for correcting Lily."

James looked at my raised hand, then at his mother's red cheek.

"Emily, apologize," he said softly.

I stared at him.

"Your mother threw our daughter onto the floor."

"She would never do that."

Lily reached for her father.

"Daddy, Grandma said I wasn't really yours."

Margaret's crying stopped.

James looked down at Lily, confused.

Then a waiter stepped forward holding Margaret's purse.

"Sir," he said, "this fell out when your mother pushed the child."

He handed James a sealed DNA test bearing Lily's name.

Margaret lunged for it, but James opened the envelope first.

His eyes reached the final line, and he looked at his mother in horror.

"Why does this say you're Lily's biological mother?"

---

What secret has Margaret been hiding all along — and what will James do now that he's seen it with his own eyes?
