Chapter 1: The Night Everything Cracked

"My mother-in-law sl@pped me across the face on Christmas night.

I fell to the floor and spilled a bowl of boiling soup over my hand.

My skin was burning.

My face was swollen.

And the entire family laughed.

I glanced at my husband, hoping he would finally stand up for me.

Instead, he told me his mother was "teaching me how to be a better wife."

That was when I took off my wedding ring and placed it beside his plate.

I was ready to walk out.

Then my father-in-law suddenly stepped into the dining room carrying a thick envelope.

He looked at my injured hand.

Then my face.

Then the ring beside his son's plate.

His next words made everyone at the table go silent:

"Before you throw Emily out, you should probably know whose name is actually on this house."
