Chapter 2: Four Words on a Screen

The room went dead quiet.

My mother-in-law's smile disappeared.

My husband's fork dropped onto his plate.

My father-in-law set the envelope on the table and slowly pushed it toward my husband.

"Open it," he said.

"Go ahead."

My husband's hands were shaking as he pulled out the papers inside.

I watched his face go pale.

"This…

this isn't possible," he whispered.

"It's very possible," his father said.

"Emily's grandmother left that deed to her three years before you two even married.

I've known since the day you moved in.

I stayed quiet long enough."

My mother-in-law slammed her hand on the table.

"She tricked us!

She planned this from the beginning!"

"She planned nothing," my father-in-law said, his voice low and firm.

"You did this to yourselves."

My husband looked at me then — really looked at me — for the first time all night.

But it wasn't guilt I saw in his eyes.

It was something colder.

He reached into his jacket pocket and placed his phone face-up on the table.

There was a message on the screen.

I only caught four words before he flipped it over.

Four words that told me this night was far from over.
