Chapter 2: The Letters She Never Saw

“I came here for you,” Alexander said.

My knees nearly gave way.

“For me?”

Victoria stepped between us.

“There must be some mistake.

She’s only the girl who helps around the house.”

“She’s your daughter,” Alexander replied coldly.

“Why are you ashamed to say it?”

Olivia gasped, while Charlotte’s smile vanished.

Victoria grabbed my arm.

“Go back to the kitchen.

Now.”

Alexander’s security guard moved forward, and she quickly released me.

Then Alexander reached inside his coat and placed a bundle of unopened letters on the counter.

Every envelope had been addressed to me, but each one was marked RETURN TO SENDER.

I stared at my mother’s handwriting beneath the stamps.

“What are those?” I whispered.

“Letters your father sent for years,” Alexander said.

“Letters Victoria made sure you never received.”

My chest tightened.

“She told me he never wanted me.”

“That’s a lie!” Victoria cried.

“You don’t understand what he did!”

Alexander pulled out one final envelope bearing a lawyer’s seal.

“I understand enough,” he said.

“Especially after reading what your husband left her.”

Victoria’s face turned pale.

She lunged for the envelope, but Alexander held it beyond her reach.

Then he looked at me and said, “Before I open this, you need to ask your mother why she has hidden your real identity all these years.”
