Chapter 2: The Warning on the Phone

My father held up his phone as the wedding guests fell silent.
“Your mother didn’t stay away because she was overwhelmed,” he said.
“She stayed away because someone warned her not to come.”
Claire gripped my arm.
“That’s ridiculous.
Who would do that?”
Dad opened the message and read it aloud.
“If you step inside that church, your son will learn the secret you’ve kept from him for thirty years.”
I turned to my mother.
Mud streaked her dress, and her hands were trembling.
“What secret?” I asked.
She looked at Claire instead of me.
“Ask your bride why she sent that message.”
Claire’s face went white.
“I never sent anything!”
Dad stepped closer.
“It came from your number, Claire.”
Gasps spread through the room, but Claire suddenly pulled out her phone.
“That’s impossible,” she whispered.
“My phone disappeared last night.”
Then my mother removed a damp envelope from her coat.
“The message wasn’t the only warning.”
Before she could open it, Claire’s maid of honor rushed forward and grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t,” the woman begged.
“If he reads that letter, the wedding won’t be the only thing ruined.”
