Chapter 4: The Father at the Door

Reverend Bell opened the church door.

A silver-haired man stood beneath the awning with one hand on a cane.

Beside him was a woman carrying a leather case.

The man looked directly at Mom.

“Hello, Evelyn.”

Mom gripped the back of a pew.

“Julian?”

Claire stepped in front of me.

“This is a performance.

Daniel, don’t let them manipulate you.”

Julian entered slowly.

“You must be Claire.”

“You have no right to be here.”

“I was invited by Martin.”

I turned on Dad.

“You knew he was alive?”

“Only since yesterday,” Dad said.

“Your mother received that letter, and I called the number.”

Mom reached for me.

I stepped away.

“You kept this from me for thirty years.”

“I was nineteen,” she said.

“Julian’s father came to my parents’ house.

He showed me a letter saying Julian wanted nothing to do with us.”

“I never wrote it,” Julian said.

“You expect me to accept that here?”

“No,” Julian replied.

“I expect you to be angry.”

Claire caught my hand.

“We can leave together.

You don’t owe these people anything.”

Mom’s face crumpled.

“These people?”

Claire did not look at her.

“Daniel has been lied to his whole life.”

“And you planned to marry him for his inheritance,” Vanessa said.

Claire pointed at her.

“You forged that note.”

Vanessa flinched.

“No.”

“You had access to my desk, my phone, and my stationery.

You arranged every meeting with Pike.”

Daniel’s aunt rose from the second pew.

“I saw Claire write that note at the rehearsal dinner.”

Claire laughed.

“From across a crowded room?”

“No,” Aunt Ruth said.

“I was behind you when you folded it.”

Claire’s mother, Eleanor, stood near the altar.

Her hands were clenched around her handbag.

“Stop this, Claire.”

“Mother, stay out of it.”

“I stayed out of it when you asked about Daniel’s family.

I stayed out of it when you copied papers from my study.

I will not stay out of this.”

Eleanor removed a small flash drive and placed it in my palm.

“I found this in Claire’s room three weeks ago.”

Claire lunged toward us, but Reverend Bell blocked her path.

“What’s on it?” I asked.

“Photographs of your mother, copies of the trust documents, and recordings of calls with Howard Pike.”

Claire stared at her mother.

“You went through my things?”

“You used my computer to open the files.”

“I’m your daughter.”

“And Evelyn is someone’s mother too.”

Claire’s mouth tightened.

“If you give him that drive, I’ll tell everyone why Dad really left you.”

Eleanor’s hand shook, but she did not take it back.

“He left because you told him I was stealing from him,” she said.

“I spent ten years protecting you from that truth.”

Claire’s expression did not change.

Eleanor looked at me.

“Listen to the file marked ‘final instructions.’”

Julian’s solicitor opened her laptop and inserted the drive.

Claire grabbed the power cord, but Dad caught it before it came loose.

A recording filled the church.

Claire’s voice was unmistakable.

“Once Daniel signs, Pike will file the replacement page.

By the time he realizes what he surrendered, the money will be beyond his reach.”

My hand closed around the unsigned wedding documents in my jacket.

Claire looked at the papers, then at me.

“Don’t open those,” she said.

I took them out.

The signature page beneath our marriage licence was not the page I had reviewed with my own solicitor.

Across the top were six words:

IRREVOCABLE APPOINTMENT OF JOINT TRUSTEE.

Claire whispered, “Daniel, I can explain.”

Before I could answer, Dad placed another document beside it.

“You should explain this first,” he said.

“It carries my signature.”
