Chapter 1: The Broken Half-Heart

My new fiancée ripped my late wife’s locket off my seven-year-old son’s neck and threw it into our engagement cake.
Seconds later, my mother-in-law revealed a secret that turned the whole room silent.
I remained frozen in the hotel ballroom as Diana snapped the chain.
“He needs to let go,” she sneered, dropping the silver half-heart pendant straight into the white icing.
My seven-year-old son, Oliver, sank to his knees beside the table.
“Mom gave it to me,” he sobbed, staring at the ruined cake.
My heart shattered, and anger surged through my veins.
I stepped forward and used a fresh napkin to fish my late wife’s pendant out of the cake.
I turned around, staring coldly into Diana’s eyes.
“Take off my ring,” I told her quietly.
Diana’s smug smile vanished immediately.
“You’re choosing a necklace over us?” she screamed, clutching her ring tightly.
I pulled Oliver behind my back, shielding him.
Suddenly, my late wife’s mother, Lorraine, walked through the silent crowd.
She was holding another silver half-heart pendant in her hand.
“I found Emma’s missing half,” Lorraine said firmly.
She placed it beside Oliver’s pendant on the table.
The two pieces locked together perfectly into one whole heart.
Diana’s face turned ghostly pale as she slowly stepped back.
“Where did you find it?” I asked, my voice trembling.
Lorraine pointed straight at Diana’s designer handbag on the table.
