Chapter 2: The Woman in the Photograph

“Don’t touch my bag!” Diana shouted, lunging across the table.

Lorraine pulled it away.

“Why are you frightened if you have nothing to hide?”

“You planted that pendant!” Diana cried.

“She’s trying to ruin our engagement!”

Oliver gripped my hand.

I could feel him trembling.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

“How did Emma’s necklace get into your handbag?”

“I’ve never seen it before!”

Lorraine shook her head.

“That isn’t all I found.”

She reached into her coat and produced a small photograph.

Diana’s expression changed the moment she saw it.

The picture showed Emma standing outside our old house three years earlier.

Beside her was Diana.

My breath caught.

Diana had always claimed she had never met my late wife.

“You knew Emma?” I demanded.

“It isn’t what you think,” Diana whispered.

“Then explain the date written on the back,” Lorraine said.

Before I could take the photograph, Diana snatched her handbag and rushed toward the door.

Oliver suddenly stepped from behind me.

“Dad,” he said, pointing at Diana, “I remember her now.

She came to see Mom the night before Mom was gone.”

Diana stopped moving.

Then Oliver revealed the one sentence he had heard them arguing about.
