Chapter 2: The Letter Maya Signed

“Don’t take another step,” I said.

My wife stopped with her hand on the doorknob.

“You’re misunderstanding everything.

That message was a joke.”

“A joke?” I held up the phone.

“You’ve been trying to drive my daughter out of her own home.”

Maya stared at her.

“Why don’t you want me here?”

My wife opened her mouth, but her son interrupted.

“She made Maya sleep without dinner last week,” he said.

“Then she took pictures when Maya cried.”

“That’s enough!” my wife shouted.

I pulled Maya close and opened the phone’s photo gallery.

There was an album labeled “Evidence.” Inside were dozens of pictures of Maya crying, sitting alone, and carrying a packed bag I had never seen.

“What were you planning to do with these?” I demanded.

Before she could answer, the hidden phone rang.

The caller’s name made all the color leave her face: “Mr.

Bell—Family Attorney.”

I answered and put it on speaker.

A man’s voice said, “Did Maya sign the letter yet?

If she doesn’t leave willingly by Friday, your entire plan falls apart.”

Then Maya whispered, “Dad…

she already made me sign something.”
