Chapter 1: The Three Words

My sister-in-law ripped my maternity gown before 200 wedding guests and accused me of th3ft.

My husband handed her my purse, so I called my father and whispered three words.

The entire wedding celebration came to an abrupt halt when Chloe's scream cut through the room.

'My ring!' she shrieked.

Nearly two hundred guests turned toward her bare finger.

'The Matriarch Ring is gone!'

Chloe lifted her arm and pointed straight at me.

'Search the parasite.'

I remained frozen near the champagne fountain, eight months pregnant, cradling my belly.

Across the room, my husband Daniel turned away.

'I did not touch your ring,' I said, trying to remain calm.

'Then prove it,' Chloe spat as she lunged at me.

Her mother, Eleanor, deliberately stomped her heel onto the train of my blue gown.

The sharp sound of tearing silk echoed through the hall.

The entire outer layer of my gown split completely down to my waist.

For three years, I had kept quiet while they treated me like garbage.

I looked straight at my husband.

'Tell them to stop.

Now.'

Daniel stepped forward and took my purse from my hands.

'It is just to prove you are innocent,' he whispered, handing it to his sister.

In that moment, my marriage was finished.

Chloe dumped my belongings onto the marble floor.

Lipstick, keys, vitamins, and a black access card scattered across the ground.

Eleanor went through everything and found nothing.

'She hid it!' Chloe yelled.

'Call the police!'

I pulled my torn dress together and picked up my phone.

'I am not calling the police,' I said.

'I am calling my family.'

My father answered on the first ring.

I leaned closer so only Daniel could hear me.

'Dad...

d3stroy them all.'

My father replied without hesitation.

'Stay where you are.

The doors are already locking.'
