Chapter 2: The Coat on the Screen
A heavy click echoed through the hall as every exit locked.
Chloe’s face went pale.
“What did you do?”
Before I could answer, Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Who exactly is your father?”
“You never cared enough to ask,” I said, pulling away.
Eleanor laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous.
She is only trying to frighten us.
Search her again.”
“No one touches her.”
The venue’s security director stepped from behind the stage with two guards.
He looked at my torn gown, then placed a tablet on the table.
“Sir, we reviewed the ballroom cameras,” he said.
“The ring was never near her.”
Chloe suddenly reached for the tablet.
“Turn that off!”
Daniel stared at his sister.
“Why are you afraid of the recording?”
“I’m not!” Chloe snapped.
“She planned this!”
The security director pressed play.
The screen showed Chloe removing the Matriarch Ring minutes before her scream.
Then she crossed the ballroom and slipped something into another guest’s coat pocket.
Eleanor whispered, “Chloe, whose coat was that?”
Chloe backed away as the doors opened behind her.
A silver-haired man entered, surrounded by attorneys and security.
Every trace of arrogance vanished from Eleanor’s face.
Daniel looked from him to me.
“That’s your father?”
My father ignored him and pointed at the frozen image on the tablet.
“Zoom in,” he ordered.
“I want everyone to see who Chloe was trying to frame.”
