Chapter 2: Something in the Glass

At the hospital, they rushed me into emergency monitoring.
My husband never left my side.
His hand stayed on mine the whole time.
Then the doctor came in and closed the door.
"There's something you need to know," she said quietly.
"The injury from the kick was serious.
But that's not what concerns us most."
She placed a small printed report on the bed.
"We found traces of a substance in your bloodstream.
Something that doesn't belong there."
I stared at her.
"What kind of substance?"
She didn't answer right away.
My husband stood up slowly.
"Someone dr*gged her?"
"We're running a full panel now.
But yes.
Whatever was in her system — it was introduced before the incident outside."
I thought back to the family lunch.
The glass of juice my mother had handed me personally.
"Drink it, sweetheart.
It's good for the baby."
My husband walked to the door and looked down the hallway.
My parents were still there.
Sitting calmly.
My mother was folding a tissue in her lap.
My father was on his phone.
My husband turned back to me, his voice barely above a whisper.
"They planned this before we even arrived today."
Then a nurse stepped in and handed him a folded note.
"A woman left this at the front desk.
She said you'd need it."
He opened it.
His face went completely still.
