Chapter 1: The Son Who Came Back for the House

**My son abandoned me 12 years ago, but the moment he found out I purchased a luxury mansion, he showed up at my door expecting to move in.**

I hadn't heard from Daniel in over a decade.

No calls.

No letters.

Not even a message when his father passed.

He simply walked away and built his own life as if I didn't exist.

Then last Tuesday, my doorbell rang.

I opened the door and there he was — Daniel, standing on my front porch with two suitcases and a smile I hadn't seen in twelve years.

"Mom," he said, like no time had passed at all.

"I heard about the house.

It's beautiful."

I stood there, holding the door, not saying a word.

He glanced past me into the entrance hall and nodded slowly, as if he was already deciding which room would be his.

"I've been going through a rough patch," he said.

"I figured, since you have all this space now…

family should stick together, right?"

*Family.*

He used that word like it cost him nothing.

I looked at my son — this stranger on my porch — and felt something shift inside me.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something quieter than both.

"You have two suitcases," I said.

He nodded.

"I can get the rest from the car."

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I stepped back…

and slowly reached for the door.

What will Daniel do when he hears what his mother says next?
