Chapter 2: The Woman in the Passenger Seat

Part 2 👇

I didn't open it wider.

I closed it.

Not sl@mmed.

Not with anger.

Just a slow, quiet click — the kind that says everything words can't.

For a moment, Daniel just stood there on the other side.

Then the knocking started.

"Mom.

Mom, come on.

I know you're right there."

I pressed my back against the door and didn't move.

"I made mistakes, okay?" His voice cracked just enough to sound convincing.

"I was young and stupid.

But I'm here now.

Doesn't that count for something?"

I closed my eyes.

Twelve years.

No calls.

No letters.

Not even a single word when his father was buried in the rain with only me and two neighbors standing at the graveside.

And now he was here because of the house.

I walked to the window and looked out.

That's when I saw it — a woman sitting in the passenger seat of his car.

She was watching the front door with her arms crossed, not worried, just…

waiting.

Like she already knew she was moving in.

Daniel hadn't mentioned her.

I reached for my phone and called the one person I trusted completely.

She picked up on the second ring.

"He's here," I said.

A long pause.

Then she said something that made me grip the phone tighter.

"I know.

He called me three weeks ago.

There's something you need to hear."

What did Daniel's call reveal — and who is the woman sitting in that car?

The full truth is more shocking than you'd expect.
