Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to Say

The fire burned itself out quickly.
But the fury in that room didn't.
My stepmother stood frozen for exactly three seconds.
Then something shifted behind her eyes — cold, calculating, dangerous.
"You just made the biggest mistake of your life," she said quietly, pointing one perfect nail at my father.
"I want her out of this house tonight.
Both of you, out."
My father didn't flinch.
"This is my house.
My name is on every single deed."
"Not for long," she said.
And she smiled.
That smile made my stomach drop.
Her daughter pulled out her phone, fingers moving fast.
"Mom already spoke to Uncle Gerald last week," she said, glancing up with glittering eyes.
"You didn't know that, did you?"
My father went very still.
I looked between them.
"Dad?
Who is Uncle Gerald?"
He didn't answer.
But his jaw tightened in a way I had never seen before.
My stepmother smoothed her jacket slowly, completely composed now, as if the fire had never even happened.
She turned toward the door, then stopped.
"Ask your father what he signed fourteen months ago," she said softly.
"Ask him what he traded away to keep this family together."
She walked out without another word.
My father stood in the middle of that scorched room, staring at nothing — and for the first time in my life, he looked afraid.
