Chapter 2: My Mother’s Hidden Warning

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Then tell me.”

My sister lifted a small metal box from the back seat.

I recognized it immediately.

It had belonged to my mother.

“Where did you get that?” I asked.

“It was behind the loose panel beneath your window,” Dad said.

“Your sister found it while moving into the room.”

My stepmother’s face tightened.

“There are documents inside,” she snapped.

“You need to sign them over.”

“Sign what over?”

Dad lowered his eyes.

“The house.”

I stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

He stepped closer to the gate.

“Your mother didn’t leave the house to me.

She left it to you.

I was only allowed to manage it until you turned twenty-five.”

I had turned twenty-five two months earlier.

“You knew?” My voice shook.

“You let her throw me out of my own home?”

“It isn’t that simple,” he whispered.

My stepmother struck the gate with her palm.

“Open this gate now!”

Then my sister pulled a sealed envelope from the box.

“There’s something else,” she said.

“A letter addressed to you.”

Dad suddenly reached for it, but my sister stepped back.

On the envelope, in my mother’s handwriting, were seven words:

“Your father must never know what I found.”

Dad’s face went completely pale.
